Celebrating Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown’s (AC7) second, and the series’ 25th, anniversaries, developer Project Aces announced AC7 has sold over 2.5 million units worldwide, the second-best in the series.
The Ace Combat series is one that prides itself in over-the-top depictions of air-to-air combat, with planes being able to carry hundreds of missiles, absorb multiple missile hits, and ultimately fly through a tunnel at some point. Although the gameplay is alluring enough, by all accounts, the series has flown under the radar the last few years – no pun intended.
Nevertheless, it still has a dedicated following, thanks to the series’ superb gameplay and underrated soundtrack. As a result, Ace Combat series developer Project Aces announced that AC7 has sold more than 2.5 million units worldwide.
Roughly translated, the tweet reads:
“[#ACE7 worldwide sales exceeded 2.5 million] The worldwide sales of Ace Combat 7: Skies Unknown have exceeded 2.5 million! We are releasing a commemorative wallpaper with gratitude to all the ace pilots around the world. https://25th.acecombat.jp Thank you for your continued support! #AceCombat”

This makes AC7 the second-best selling Ace Combat game in the series, behind 2001’s Ace Combat 4: Shattered Skies (AC4). It is worth mentioning that while the former was released on the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Steam in Jan. 2019, Ace Combat 4 was only released for the PlayStation 2. Overall, AC4 sold more than 2.6 million copies and was critically acclaimed, with many considering it one of the best Ace Combat games in the series.
Along with celebrating AC7’s sales accomplishment, Project Aces and parent company Bandai Namco also announced new free downloadable content (DLC) for the game, commemorating the series’ 25th anniversary.
The DLC features 10 skins for a variety of aircraft including some skins from previous Ace Combat games – such as Ace Combat 2, AC4 and Ace Combat 6 – as well as 10 new emblems players can put on their craft. Perhaps one of most intriguing skins included is a “glowing” skin, making the X-02S – a series superplane staple – appear in an indescribable way.
Lastly, Ace Combat series Brand Director Kazutoki Kono wrote a quick note to players, thanking them for sticking with the series for the last 25 years. From an arcade game called Air Combat to having 18 entries in the series, Ace Combat has been able to withstand the test of time.
In all, even though Ace Combat may not be as well known as other larger and more profitable franchises, it is still going strong, thanks to a faithful fan base and a developer that cares about its fans and listens to them. Considering AC7’s success, it only makes sense to look forward to potentially the next game in the series: Ace Combat 8.
Regardless of whether or not Ace Combat 8 gets announced in the near future, the fact remains: even with the series hitting peaks and valleys during its 25 years in existence, Ace Combat still skies above the rest, at least in the arcade/flight simulator genre.
