The gift of a game that is Animal Crossing: New Horizons has now been out for a full year, and what a year it has been. It’s undeniable that since last March, the world has been through a lot, and we’ve all found different ways to cope with everything which has been thrown at us. The adorable and comforting world of AC: NH delivered many of us through the tough times in this last year. It’s time to take a look back, celebrate this remarkable game, and sink into the nostalgia that helped so many of us.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons swept across social media this time last year, giving us all a warm and cozy place to turn to when we needed a respite from the world. There were countless posts from celebrities, gamers, and literally everyone sharing their adventures on their own private islands. Brie Larson, an actor and avid gamer herself, partnered with Nintendo and promoted the newest addition to the Animal Crossing series. Although not every post by a celebrity talking about being stuck at home was exactly relatable, seeing Brie gushing over this island getaway was certainly a bright spot in the last hellish year.
In a year when we all needed to be reminded to feel happy and settled, Animal Crossing: New Horizons gave us a revamped way to step back into our childhoods. While it was a new world within the Animal Crossing universe, it was a throwback to the old games. It gave everyone who has played Animal Crossing in the past a way to step back into that past, embracing that less-complicated time of life.
This was the first Animal Crossing game some of us (including myself) played, and it came at a time when we all needed something new to distract us from life. Whether this was your first experience with Animal Crossing or you were quite used to Tom Nook’s shady ways when you picked up this new edition for your Switch, there’s no doubt about it: this game has been a blessing this past year.
There’s never a bad time for a comforting game to join the world of gamers, but in this past year, we’ve needed feel-good games more than ever before. Animal Crossing: New Horizons couldn’t have come out at a better time, and I’m sure we can all agree that without Tom Nook and the rest of the island group, this past year would have been much harder to bear. From this anniversary onward, the future of Animal Crossing: New Horizons as a game of great joy and peace is incredibly bright. Here’s to hoping that this next year gets better, and that we can play AC: NH more out of joy than out of necessity.
