A brand-spanking-new Ratchet & Clank animated short recently popped up on Canadian streaming service Crave. The news comes as a welcome surprise to fans of the Insomniac Games’ series, but it has us all wondering: where did it come from?

In a statement by Playstation, Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie was described as an independently-sanctioned animation unrelated to the upcoming PS5 game Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart. Which, when it comes to timing, seems…odd. It’s doubt thrilling to those who have followed the intergalactic excursions of the enjoyable duo, but it’s odd nonetheless.

The animation was unearthed by Reddit users on Crave who found that, although it is not under the Playstation umbrella, Life of Pie stands alone amongst the games and movie, which we’ll get to in just a minute. In an even more curious development, the entire original voice cast of the Ratchet and Clank games took part in the making of the mini-feature.

The animation was done by Mainframe Studios, and the credits say the feature was produced in 2019. But PlayStation confirmed to IGN that Life of Pie is not related to the upcoming PS5 game or the existing canon.

Regarding the new animation short, a Playstation representative had this to say:

Ratchet & Clank: Life of Pie is a standalone, licensed animated special created and distributed by Mainframe Studios. The show is not related to the upcoming Ratchet & Clank game for PlayStation 5 and is not official canon to the franchise’s video game narrative.”

Now, if Mainframe Studios sounds familiar to you, it should. It is the same production company that developed and released 2016’s Ratchet & Clank: The Movie, which was a direct tie-in to the PS4 Ratchet & Clank reboot. The movie received solid reviews from fans of the franchise but not-so-good reviews from critics. I personally enjoyed its big screen debut. To each their own, I suppose.

We are only months away from the Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart release. If you’re like me and are eager to get your hands on the upcoming Ratchet & Clank: Rift Apart, scratch that itch by giving the new animated short a set of eyes. I know I will.
