The world of the Harry Potter fandom has spread far and wide across the world, and it has found its home in the gaming community in many different ways. There are games related to the main story and spin-off creations from the magical world, as well as an intense amount of merchandise to satisfy any and every Harry Potter gamer out there. Not all Harry Potter games are created equal, and some of them fall a little flat if you’re expecting them to compare to the movies and books, but they all serve the purpose of giving us another way to get involved in the Harry Potter world. It’s time for us to grab our wands and console controllers and adventure through the world of Harry Potter and video games.
The first game that comes to mind when I think of Harry Potter games is the much-anticipated Hogwarts Legacy game, which was originally scheduled to be out in 2021, but was delayed until 2022. From what we know so far, Hogwarts Legacy takes you inside Hogwarts as a student to explore the mysteries and wonders of magic. According to Warner Bros. Games, “your character is a student who holds the key to an ancient secret that threatens to tear the wizarding world apart. You have received a late acceptance to the Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry and soon discover that you are no ordinary student: you possess an unusual ability to perceive and master Ancient Magic. Only you can decide if you will protect this secret for the good of all, or yield to the temptation of more sinister magic.” This introduction to this exciting new game has everyone across the gaming and Harry Potter community absolutely buzzing with excitement, and for now, all we can do is wait until 2022 and hope that the game release doesn’t get delayed again!
Another amazing contribution to the world of Harry Potter gaming is the LEGO Harry Potter series of games, which spans all of the original books and films. The LEGO Harry Potter games cover the timeline and material of the books and movies, but with delightful LEGO contributions of animation and attributes. As you play through the games, it feels as though you are stepping into a miniaturized LEGO world and living through the world you know and love from Harry Potter. The games are available across many platforms, including but not limited to the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation, Wii, and Xbox. The quality is quite excellent and pretty in line with what you would expect from a LEGO game in terms of interactions with the characters and design elements. Overall, if you love Harry Potter and LEGO, then these games will be perfect for you.
If you’re looking for something a bit more mobile, a good choice is the Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery app game. It’s quick and easy to download and learn about, and you’ll be taken along on an adventure as a student of Hogwarts. From spending time in classes to making friends to getting into trouble, you can experience everything that comes along with being a student at Hogwarts, all from the comfort of your phone. There are some limits to what you can explore, because the game does guide you along through the mysteries of Hogwarts, but overall, it is pretty open in what you can do and the choices you can make. If you’re looking for an easy Harry Potter game that you can take with you anywhere you go (with wifi at least,) Harry Potter: Hogwarts Mystery is a great option.
The gaming community has so much to offer for an immersive Harry Potter experience. These three game options are just a peek inside the world of Harry Potter games; there is really something out there for everyone, at every level of gaming. If you’ve been looking for a way to enjoy even more of the world of Harry Potter, any of these games would be a great place to start.
