Monday night it was confirmed that Golden Guardians players Can “Closer” Celik, Tanner Damonte, Ian “FBI” Huang, and Choi “huhi” Jae-hyun would be leaving Golden Guardians. Paired with Kevin “Hauntzer” Yarnell confirmed to be leaving the day prior, the entire roster of Golden Guardians will be dropped and remade for the 2021 season.
The players not going to 100 Thieves have either been bought out, or still maintain their free agency status.
The Golden Guardians were low in the NA LCS standings, until their string of powerful upsets rocketed them up from one of the worst teams in the league to fourth place, beating a powerhouse team like TSM. Although they were unable to ascend to one of the three seeds for placement in the 2020 League of Legends Worlds tournament, many analysts believed they were a strong contender for the next season, especially with strong players like Closer serving as a baseboard for the team. As of the writing of this article, Closer and FBI will be joining the 100 Thieves roster (spawning the moniker of “Golden Thieves”).
Despite the massive shift of all of their players off the roster, analysts on the Jacob Wolf’s free agency show wagered that Golden Guardians staff were one of the best teams to undergo such a dramatic shift. This is due to the fact they had built up their team’s strong performance in an extremely short period of time, and could likely do so again with renewed capability and experience to draft a fresh roster.
