How Ghoulz transformed from normal 16-year-old to Fortnite Superstar

When I was 16-years-old, I spent most of my time on my couch eating snacks while watching TV. Fortnite superstar Ghoulz just cannot relate. While only 16, he runs a successful Youtube channel with over a million subscribers!

I was lucky enough to sit down with the forward-thinking young creator and talk about his journey to Youtube stardom and where he wants to head from here.

Ghoulz

Ghoulz grew up in a small town in Washington playing video games with his friends and watching content creators on Youtube and Twitch. He streamed a little bit and even started uploading some videos of his own, but he always viewed it as more of a hobby than anything which could possibly turn into a career. This all changed once the pandemic hit in full force and lockdown began. He made his first video in earnest near the start of the pandemic and, instantly, it gained good traction. With a little hard work and direction, as well as a couple new subscribers, Ghoulz’ path lit up. “I realized, wow, gaming is actually really fun,” he recalls. This was when he realized he actually had a shot at something special.

Ghoulz focuses less on being an amazingly-skilled Fortnite player and more on creating entertaining content. Of course Ghoulz is a better player than I will ever be, but I really find myself attracted to the relaxed vibe he creates in his videos. You can tell that at the end of the day, the most important thing for him in gaming is having fun. I respect that.

Even though I’m trash at the game, Ghoulz and I had very similar experiences with our first Fortnite wins. “I remember my first win vividly,” Ghoulz told me, “I had zero kills and my friends carried me the whole way.” Same here, buddy. It was refreshing to talk to someone who doesn’t take himself too seriously. Ghoulz even admits he is not the best player in the world, which is why he mostly sticks to his goal of being an entertainer.

With the amount of quality content this young man produces on the regular, you may forget that he is still a full-time high school student. Ghoulz expressed to me that “This has actually been one of my biggest challenges with everything going on. It is hard to balance my family and social life with Youtube; I do not think I have been good at it, but I have gotten better over time.” At the height of the pandemic, he was spending a full 10 hours a day creating content. Though he’s since calmed down a bit, his schedule doesn’t leave much room for anything else. Good content takes time, and to keep up with the demand for his videos, Ghoulz just recently hired a full-time editor, which is a great step to help him manage his time better. After all, he is only 16, and he deserves to have some time to be a kid.

Ghoulz is all about helping any of his fans who also want to become creators. His biggest tip for starting a successful channel is to “know who you are as a creator and stay consistent. People will like you for who you are.” I feel like this is also just a great tip for life in general. Though he’s only 16, Ghoulz has some very mature outlooks on life.

It’s crazy that all of Ghoulz’ success and fame has only come with the pandemic. In a little more than a year, he has gained enough attention to be recognized by fans when he leaves his house. “I don’t feel famous even when I get recognized in public,” he explains. “I still feel like that same kid who was just making videos for fun. It has just been all so surreal.”

COVID-19 has taken away so much from everyone, but it at least jumpstarted Ghoulz’ crazy-fast channel growth. He even admits that he would not be where he is as a creator today if COVID-19 had never happened. His time off school allowed him to grind, which is crucial for any new content creator. He also mentioned that kids seemed to have more time to watch content, as they were also at home most days for online schooling.

That being said, COVID-19 was not the only reason for his channel’s growth. Ghoulz says, “I worked really hard, I wanted to be a Youtube creator. I wanted it so bad. I put in a ton of time and learned from my mistakes.”

So, what’s next for this teenage superstar? Well, he just joined esports team One Percent. The team’s made up of a bunch of like-minded creators who are going to help propel Ghoulz to the next stage of his content creation. As he comes out of lockdown and meets more people who share his same drive and passion, he’ll only go further and further in his content creation journey. Past that, he really doesn’t know what he wants to do, and that’s perfectly fine. He’s only 16: most teenagers his age have no idea where life has even guided them in the first place, let alone where they will head next. The biggest thing is that he wants to continue being an entertainer in whatever form that may take.

We’ll just have to wait and see what happens next for this young man. I’m crossing my fingers for even more awesome Ghoulz content to come.

Huge shout outs to Ghoulz for taking the time to talk with me. To check out his Twitter, Youtube, and Instagram, click here, here, and here.
