How I Got Into Five Nights at Freddy’s

At this point, the legend that is the Five Nights at Freddy’s game series is well-known. They’ve been around since 2014 and have drawn in a huge fanbase. The games are fairly traumatizing (in the best way possible) and odds are, if you’re a fan, you have a pretty vivid memory of the first time you came into contact with them. Today, I’m psyched to share my story of how I became a fan of FNaF and explore one of the many ways that people do get into new games.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

My first experience with the horror of Five Nights at Freddy’s came from watching Markiplier play through the game on his Youtube channel. I spent an afternoon curled up under a blanket on the couch, simultaneously terrified and unable to look away from the horror in front of me. Since that first time a few years ago, I’ve watched other streamers and even a few friends play FNaF, but if I’m ever feeling nostalgic (which happens fairly often) I will go back to Markiplier’s videos of the games and relive those first moments of fear in learning all about the world of Five Nights at Freddy’s

I am yet to actually play any of the FNaF games myself (honestly, I don’t think I have quite enough nerve to make it through them), but watching them through streamers like Markiplier has given me a very memorable experience. I went on to watch more of Markiplier’s videos and learn about a lot of games through his expertise. And he’s certainly not the only streamer who has helped me learn more about games and the gaming experience.

I’m a somewhat seasoned gamer at this point (or at least, I’m beyond the label of ‘newbie’) and I still continue to get a lot of information about games that I want to play, or just games that I want to watch, through several different streamers. I have a few favorite streamers, and I’ve found that watching streamers that I like and playing games that I’m interested in is a great way to learn about a game before I play it. That way, I feel super comfortable with it when I do sit down to play.

For those of you who hate spoilers, watching streamers play games you’re interested in might be a bit of a bother. I’m lucky in that spoilers aren’t much of an issue for me. Regardless, for anyone who’s nervous to play a game for any reason, watching even a bit of a streamer playing that game can be a great way to get acquainted with the game before you dive into it.

The animatronic monsters of FNaF are permanently seared into my nightmares from that first experience. If I were ever to play any of those terrifying games, I would be prepared (as much as I could be) because I’ve already walked through that fear with Markiplier and come out the other side with only some light emotional scarring.

Watching Markiplier walk through the FNaF games introduced me to a world I would have been too terrified to walk into on my own. If there’s ever a game that you’re scared of, worried about, or apprehensive of in any way, watching your favorite streamer play through it is an amazing way to expand your gaming world with an experienced gamer walking with you every step of the way.
