Kanye West Almost Teamed Up With Nintendo to Make a Video Game

It doesn’t look like Nintendo ever told Kanye “Imma let you finish.”

The former Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime revealed recently that he had a meeting with rapper and former presidential candidate Kanye West. The story of the interaction was brought up by Fils-Aime on his podcast Talking Games with Reggie & Harold. The podcast is a seven-part series to support a non-profit organization to support homeless high school students in New York City called the New York Videogame Critics Circle.

Fils-Aime claimed that at an E3 event several years ago, West approached Shigeru Miyamoto for a talk at the Nintendo Booth. The visionary rapper/fashion designer requested to have a meeting with Fils-Aime at one of West’s offices in Calabasas, California.

Anyone who finds Kanye West’s tangential trains of thought amusing would’ve most likely loved to have been a fly on the wall during that conversation, where his wife Kim Kardashian was also present. He is a creative force who not only revolutionized the music and fashion industry respectively, but also has plans to revolutionize the education system, church gatherings, and US politics with his own political party, the Birthday Party. It makes sense that he had the video game industry in his ambitious sights.

Fils-Aime didn’t go into too much detail about what happened during the meeting outside of the fact that West expressed interest in teaming up with Nintendo and that he was working on pieces of video game content. The only game produced by Kanye that the public was previously aware of was his mobile game Only One, announced at the Yeezy Season 3 fashion show and listening party for his album The Life of Pablo in February 2016.

The game was intended for iOS devices and is about guiding his mother, Donda West, on a journey to reach the afterlife. The player is instructed to take his mother “to the highest gates of heaven by holding her to the light.” Kanye’s mother famously passed away in 2007 and has had a seismic impact on the trajectory of his career. The name of West’s creative content company is DONDA and he is expected to drop an album soon with his mother’s name as the title. The mobile game continues to remain in developmental limbo, with little word as to what happened to it.

At the end of the meeting in Calabasas, Reggie had to inform Kanye that Nintendo had too many different projects going on at the same time and had to decline the rapper’s offer to team up. Reggie went on to say that Kanye had a strong passion for the video game space, is an innovating creator, and that overall the meeting was very interesting.

It’s interesting to think what could have come from this collaboration if the deal went through. Since Nintendo declined Kanye’s offer politely, we shouldn’t expect any diss records or directed tirades as he did with Nike. But like he always says: “n-now th-that that don’t kill me, can only make me stronger.”
