After a year without watching MSI, this year’s tournament had us live the spirit once again. It is always fun watching the strongest teams in each region compete against each other on the big stage. This year, RNG and DAMWON KIA, the China and Korea representatives, made it to the final stage and competed against each other for an extra spot for this year’s Worlds. In the end, LPL won the extra spot and lifted the trophy with a dominant performance in every game it has won.
The Chinese representatives had an impressive start to the tournament. It was pretty much expected considering the other members of the group. RNG didn’t upset its fans and made it out of the first stage without dropping a game, 8-0. The group that RNG was competing in was pretty surprising. Oceania’s Pentanet managed to make it out of the group by beating Unicorns of Love. We saw UOL stepping up in Worlds 2020 against big opponents.
During the next stage, Royal Never Give Up faced some troubles and got punished three times by Cloud9, PSG Talon and MAD Lions. Other than that, RNG managed to beat its biggest opponent, DAMWON KIA, two times before the final stage. Royal Never Give Up’s efforts were all targeted to meet DAMWON KIA in finals. It was obvious that the team was going to eliminate its opponents, but the only question mark in our heads was the BO5 against DAMWON KIA.
Before meeting the Korean champion, RNG had to overcome PSG Talon. PSG’s impressive run shaked but couldn’t demolish RNG’s hopes. In the other bracket, EU’s MAD Lions won two games against DAMWON but it wasn’t enough for the final run. In the end, the expectations came true as RNG and DAMWON competed in the final stage.
The finals were really fun to watch. Both teams played their hearts out and reached the peak point of entertainment. Showmaker’s pocket pick Xerath and Khan’s Lee Sin were effective, but most importantly, GALA had an incredible final performance. The Chinese marksman had a great split in LPL and even a better performance at MSI. The score was 2-2 and the fifth game decided the MSI 2021 winner. RNG literally stomped DAMWON in the fifth game and lifted the trophy. GALA won the MVP award and added the trophy to his resume.
To sum up, RNG’s MSI 2021 run was really impressive. By winning the trophy, the team has provided a huge favor for the Chinese region. LPL will send an extra team to this year’s Worlds and have a better chance of winning it all.
