New Cyberpunk 2077 DLC promised for early 2021… maybe

Who’s ready to get burned by Cyberpunk 2077 again? I sure know I am. A few days before New Years, NME reported an official web page promising free Cyberpunk 2077 DLC.

Details on the Cyberpunk DLC web page are sparse. If you click and find yourself on the web page, you may be disappointed to see not much more than looping prerelease, pre-rendered trailer footage alongside the declaration that “free DLC starts hitting night city early 2021.”

Of course, this raises several questions over what CD Projekt Red can deliver in terms of DLC in early 2021. As you already know, Cyberpunk 2077 didn’t have the smoothest launch, and it looks like the folks over at CDPR have their work cut for them with just getting the game fixed and optimized on last-gen hardware.

This is also complicated by the fact that, according to reporting from Engadget, the Cyberpunk DLC webpage appears to have gone live on launch day for Cyberpunk 2077 and has only just recently been discovered.

Adding to this, everything else that has come out about Cyberpunk 2077 DLC since launch has been through a CD Projekt investor call where CDPR CEOs and management were raked over the coals for mishandling the game’s launch.

Specifically, CD Projekt CEO Adam Kincinski responded to a question from investors on plans for Cyberpunk 2077 DLC release by saying that “it’s too early to judge,” that at the moment the development company is focused on “improving Cyberpunk,” and that there will be more to discuss in early 2020.

Essentially, all signs pointing to the promise of Cyberpunk 2077 DLC in early 2021 were made before the game’s kerfuffle of a launch, so don’t set your hopes too high. That being said, CD Projekt Red’s previous game The Witcher 3 had continued free DLC which included improvements to the game and added cosmetic flourishes.

If free DLC does come in early 2021, it’ll probably be minor additions to the game rather than a free DLC expanding the Cyberpunk 2077 content. And honestly, that’s probably for the best since it would be adding insult to injury for those playing Cyberpunk on last-gen if CD Projekt Red released hefty DLC additions before addressing performance issues on last-gen versions of the game.

In the meantime, if you’re still playing Cyberpunk 2077, there are patches and fixes to the game on PS4 and Xbox One coming in January and February 2021.
