Square Enix’s new trademarks imply potential additions to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII (Warning, may contain spoilers.)
On January 12, 2021 – almost a year after the release of Final Fantasy VII Remake and the return to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII – Square Enix has trademarked new titles that have been made public to Japan. The trademarked names, which were applied for on December 17, 2020, are “Ever Crisis” and “The First Soldier.” Square also trademarked Final Fantasy VII’s Shinra Electric Power Company logo on December 22, 2020.
With the second chapter of the episodic Final Fantasy VII Remake reportedly in development, these new trademarks could mean many things. The name “Ever Crisis” possibly hints at content related to the 2007 PlayStation Portable game Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, a prequel to the original 1997 Final Fantasy VII that tells the story of Zack Fair – the previous wielder of the buster sword before Cloud Strife.
With almost thirteen years since the PSP release of the game, it is possible that “Ever Crisis” could be a remake or remaster of Crisis Core.
There is, however, another installment in the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII known as Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, another prequel to the original main series title that was released only in Japan for mobile service. Before Crisis focuses on the Turks unit of Shinra, and takes place six years before the events of Final Fantasy VII.
Final Fantasy VII Remake notably featured content from Crisis Core and other media from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, such as characters Kyrie Canaan and Leslie Kyle (from the novel Final Fantasy VII The Kids Are Alright: A Turks Side Story.) Considering its inclusion of multiple parts of the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, it could be speculated that Ever Crisis may include content from Before Crisis as well. Referring back to the heavy Crisis Core connection seen in Final Fantasy VII Remake however, it could also be a title directly related to the episodic reconstruction.
“The First Soldier” title is a possible hint at Compilation of Final Fantasy VII content revolving around Sephiroth. Resulting from a special experiment performed on him in the womb, Sephiroth was born with incredible abilities that would become the framework for the Shinra Electric Power Company’s elite fighting force, SOLDIER. With this in mind, it is speculated that “The First Soldier” does indeed refer to Sephiroth, and that we could possibly see a narrative focusing on, or pertaining to, his background.
With these new trademarks made public, the anticipation for Square Enix’s future content for the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII grows larger. While developers have confirmed that the second part of Final Fantasy VII Remake is in the works, more official statements have yet to be released.
