Overwatch Lunar New Year events tend to stir excitement among the gaming community, as they introduce a surplus of new skins, emotes, player icons, sprays, and highlight intros. The ‘Year of the Ox’ event was teased by Overwatch’s official Twitter account on February 1 with little information revealed about the event outside of a highlight clip of Dva, followed by the event title card.
In the couple of days leading up to the event, Blizzard shared a look at some of the new skins available to apply to select characters. These shared skins included the Tiger Huntress skin for Ashe, the Kkachi skin for Echo, Dragonfire Bastion, and the Bull-Demon skin for Orisa.
Since the update was released, the full list of skins was shared, which included the limited edition skins: Terracotta Medic Baptiste, Xiake McCree, and Imperial Guard Reaper. These three skins are unlockable after completing the weekly challenges by playing games in Quick Play, Competitive Play, or Arcade mode. Players who win three games will net the player icon, followed by the spray, ultimately the skin at six games.
The Lunar New Year event brings back some old game modes while introducing a brand new one. As fans had anticipated, Capture the Flag is back along with Capture the Flag Blitz. The difference between the two versions is Blitz version brings both teams’ flag closer together and increases the amount of captures required to win.
The event also introduced a new game mode: Bounty Hunter mode. This is a part of the Arcade game roster and features a point system that racks up based on bounty kills. Whichever player gets the first kill in the game becomes the Target while all other players are the Bounty Hunters. You claim bounties by landing the killing blow on the Target, but doing so makes you the next Target.
The Lunar New Year patch also comes with some general bug fixes. A new option has been introduced allowing players to toggle between the default playback controls and “fine-grained” playback controls, which lets players change the replay playback speed in smaller increments.
Multiple bugs found on the newest map, Kanezaka, were fixed including several missing collision glitches and certain map geometry. The heroes that received minor fixes include Brigitte, Baptiste, Reaper, Reinhardt, Sombra, Symmetra, Wrecking Ball, and Zenyatta.
So begins the latest Overwatch Lunar New Year event, which runs from February 4 to February 25. This is going to be a huge month for the Overwatch community not only because of the new content from ‘Year of the Ox,’ but also because the event will coincide with Blizzcon later this month on February 19 and 20. Plenty of Overwatch 2 info is bound to be released so as of now fans will have to collect their Lunar Loot Boxes and stay tuned.
