Sony is ratcheting up the deals by giving away the latest Ratchet & Clank game for free through the PlayStation store.
Yup, you read that right. Tell your friends, tell your neighbors, tell your parents that Ratchet & Clank is free for PS4 and PS5 regardless of whether or not you have a PlayStation Plus membership. As part of Sony’s Play a Home Initiative, Ratchet & Clank is the first of a handful of free games to come to PlayStation owners from now until June. The promotion is a continuation of last year’s Play at Home Initiative which served up free downloads of Journey and Uncharted: the Nathan Drake Collection.
As the name of the Sony’s Play at Home Initiative implies, the entire purpose of the promotion is to get Playstation owners to sit their butts at home throughout the pandemic. And what better way to do that than offering up a remake of a Playstation classic, Ratchet & Clank.
For those not in the know, Ratchet & Clank was all the rage back in the PS2 days, spawning two sequels to the original game, a handful of spin-off titles on PS2 and the PSP, and a series of so-so reboot/revitalization attempts on the PS3.
The latest and currently free entry in the series, Ratchet & Clank, is spinning a few different plates by firstly being a tie-in game to the 2016 animated Ratchet & Clank film as well as a full remake of the first game.
While Ratchet & Clank isn’t anything new for veterans of the series given that it’s essentially a rebuild of the classic levels from the first game interspersed with new cutscenes, it does serve as a great entry point for those out there wanting to get into the series but not necessarily willing to find and dust off a PS2 copy of the original game.
A lot of what made the original game great is retained here such as tight action platforming, inventive weapons, and the same Dreamworks-esque nudge-and-wink humor.
What’s new though is a sheen update to the graphics, which bring to life some of the muddier-looking planets with vibrant, HD saturated hues as well as small overalls to some of the gameplay.
If that sounds enticing to you, then I’d highly recommend you jump on getting Ratchet & Clank while it’s free and sitting your butt inside to play it so you don’t catch the ‘rona.
My fellow weebs out there will also be excited to know that Sony is also offering up an extended free Funimation trial for the Play at Home Initiative as well.
So yeah, get your free stuff from Sony while it’s hot and keep an eye on Stropse.com for more free games coming down the pipe for PlayStation’s Play at Home Initiative.
