After rumors spiraled regarding FC Schalke 04’s (S04) future in the LEC, executives issued a statement regarding the future of the football team.
Managing Directors Tim Reichert and Claudio Kasper released the statement following rumors that S04 would be selling their spot in the LEC due to budgetary issues from their owners – FC Schalke 04, a football organization based in Germany.
“We are currently in the process of evaluating different options that the club can take depending on the circumstances it’ll find itself by the end of this Bundesliga season,” the organization said in a statement on Twitter. “This includes, but is not limited to, selling the LEC to an interested buyer.”
The statement also mentions that the organization is not required nor wants to sell its LEC spot, but the option still remains depending on what happens in the near future.
Reichert hosted a Reddit AMA Wednesday evening to answer more questions, and to provide clarity on the subject, including the financial futures of S04.
S04’s financial burdens have come mostly in wake of the COVID-19 Pandemic. According to Deutsche Welle, a news organization based in Germany, “When it was reported that football’s coronavirus-enforced hiatus could send 13 Bundesliga and second-division clubs into insolvency earlier this year, Schalke were widely presumed to be most at risk.”
S04 has been a mainstay in recent LEC history, first joining the EU LCS in 2016, replacing Elements. From there, they were relegated to the EU LCS Challenger league and then rejoined the EU LCS in 2018. They made their first EU LCS Finals in 2018 where they lost to eventual World Finalists Fnatic. Their most recent achievements include the Miracle Run of 2020, where they were a series away from qualifying for worlds after a 1-8 start to the season.
