If you feel like you’re too bad at video games to ever fit in with your friends, fear not: I was in the same boat. I dragged my friends down time and time again in as many multiplayer games as you can imagine, but slowly, I built myself up and became a stronger gamer than I ever thought possible. Here are a couple of tips which can help you fit in better when gaming with the boys (even if you’re terrible at the games they play).
My first tip is: don’t panic. Everything will be okay, even if you die in-game. If they are your real friends, they will not make fun of you too much. Yes, you will get that occasional ribbing, but if you find yourself constantly feeling bad about your skills, maybe it is time to find some new friends to game with.
Also, just ask your friends for tips. I know I do. Some of my friends are almost as bad as me, but everyone has that one friend who’s somehow amazing at every game. Ask him or her for some advice! They know what’s going on and can help you out.
My next tip is to watch some YouTube videos on the games you and your friends are playing. By just watching good people play, you will find yourself picking up on little skills here and there. You may not notice that these skills are helping you, but slowly but surely, your friends will see that you have a better all-around understanding of the game, and that’s the first step to getting better. You also can find really good tip videos for every game by simply just searching for them online. Every game, no matter how obscure, has someone who’s obsessed with it and has made tons of videos on how to get better.
My last and maybe most important tip is to play by yourself without your friends every once in a while. Just by getting out of your head and vibing by yourself, you’ll get so much better in a short time. Of course, you don’t want to isolate yourself from your friends. But if there is a time where your friends are busy or maybe you wake up in the middle of the night and can’t sleep, you might as well hop on for a couple of games solo.
I’ve got to say, I’m not a video game expert, but these tips really helped me get a ton better at the games I love to play every day. If you have any other tips to add or if any of these tips resonated with you, please let me know. I would love to hear ‘em.
