Today, Sega announced the remaster of the 2010 Nintendo DS and Wii Sonic game, Sonic Colors. Celebrating Sonic’s 30 year anniversary, the remastered version, titled Sonic Colors: Ultimate, will launch on the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC, and Xbox One platforms on September 7, 2021.
Although the game won’t be natively playable on the Xbox Series X and the PlayStation 5, it will be backwards compatible. Sonic Colors: Ultimate will feature enhanced graphics, new power-ups, a new game mode, and cosmetics including ones from the 2020 Sonic The Hedgehog movie. California based Blind Squirrels Games, the studio known for BioShock: The Collection and Mass Effect Legendary Edition, is behind this Sonic Colors: Ultimate’s development.
Sega announced the remaster via the Sonic Central stream on Thursday. Alongside this news, Sega also announced the release of a two-part animated mini-series called Sonic Colors: Rise of the Wisps. This mini-series will tie in with the release of Sonic Colors: Ultimate and will feature Roger Craig Smith, the voice actor for Sonic. Older Sonic titles, Sonic Mania and Team Sonic Racing are available on Amazon Luna. Both these, and Sonic Forces will also be available on PlayStation Now starting June 1, 2021. Sega also announced the release of Sonic games on mobile.
A new unnamed Sonic game is also in the works, but no details have been released for it. The Netflix animated Sonic series announced in February finally has a name: Sonic Prime.You can watch the Sonic Central VoD for more details.
