Square Enix officially announced two new mobile games, Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis.
Earlier this year, Square Enix trademarked the titles “Ever Crisis” and “The First Soldier,” terms that are clearly relative to the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII. It left fans with a wide array of questions and speculations as to what might be in the works for the series. The wait is over as of today, with Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier and Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis revealed to be mobile titles arriving for iOS and Android devices. These announcements come in tandem with the news of Final Fantasy VII Remake receiving an upgraded PlayStation 5 port Final Fantasy VII Remake Intergrade and its accompanying new DLC episode.
Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier is a Battle Royale mobile game that takes place 30 years before the events of Final Fantasy VII. The game focuses on the formation of Shinra’s elite fighting force, SOLDIER, composed of individuals receiving enhanced strength and abilities through experimental procedures. Gameplay features include third-person control of what appear to be customizable characters, of whom may wield weapons, use magic and even engage in physical combat. Special actions such as high jumps, Chocobo riding and summoning will also be available to players. The game features various play stages of familiar locations from the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII, ranging from Sector 7 to Aerith’s House.
This battle royale mobile game will also feature familiar foes from the series, including the “Bomb” monster and “Cutter” mech. It is currently unknown if the game will feature a proper story mode, but with regard to its title, “The First Soldier,” and the trailer’s end message reading “Can you become history’s first SOLDIER?,” it can be speculated that the game’s narrative revolves around the experimental processes that led to Shinra’s ultimate creation of SOLDIER. Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier is set to release some time in 2021 on iOS and Android.
Announced alongside Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier, the second mobile game to come for the Compilation of Final Fantasy VII is Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis. This game will be an episodic collection spanning the entire Compilation of Final Fantasy VII’s timeline, featuring nostalgic graphical presentation. The mobile title’s visuals are highly reminiscent of the original Final Fantasy VII, especially with regard to camera placement and dialogue boxes throughout the game. It will also feature the addition of character portraits.
Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis will employ a single-player chapter story system, with the aim to present the events of not just the original Final Fantasy VII, but other compilation titles including Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII, Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children, and Dirge of Cerberus: Final Fantasy VII. It is currently unknown if the mobile game will cover story events from the series’ novels. The battle gameplay seems to resemble that of the original Active Time Battle system from the original Final Fantasy VII, including the Limit Break mechanic. Further details regarding the specific elements of Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis’ battle system have yet to be revealed.
Final Fantasy VII The First Soldier is set to launch in 2021, while Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis is slated for 2022. Both titles will be available on iOS and Android devices.
