What We Know So Far About the Uncharted Movie

The Uncharted movie has been in development since 2008 and during its time in purgatory had shuffled around different acclaimed writers, directors, and actors. Mark Wahlberg has had his name attached to the project since 2010. It took so long to get the camera rolling that Wahlberg went from preparing to portray Nathan Drake to now playing his mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan.

Filming began in March, 2020 and had significant delays due to the global pandemic. The cast is currently Tom Holland as Nathan Drake, Mark Wahlberg as Sully, Sophia Taylor Ali as Chloe Frazer, Tati Gabrielle as a character named Braddock, and Antonio Banderas as an unspecified role.

Sony’s theatrical adaptation of the beloved video game franchise from Naughty Dog will serve as an origin story taking place before the first installment, Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune. Considering the age of the star, the movie will be taking inspiration from the flashback sequences from Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception. The outfit Tom Holland is wearing in the released pictures is also similar to the wardrobe from the third installment. Despite the obvious inspiration from the source material, the film is considered to be an original story which will take on an adventure deviating from any of those from the games. Sony recently released pictures as a teaser to what Drake’s adventure will look like.

There is little to be said about these photos outside of the possibility that the statue could be of Sir Francis Drake, who Nathan Drake claims to be the descendant of. Francis Drake also played a significant role in the first Uncharted game, having Nathan Drake follow his trail in order to reach El Dorado.

The released photos do raise the question of how original is this new story actually? Could Drake be preparing for his escapade to El Dorado? The picture of Tom Holland standing in front of the wrecked ship also had fans speculating that the film would be about Drake’s search for Marco Polo’s fleet and the lost city of Shangri-La which was the synopsis for Uncharted 2: Among Thieves.

As a part of promoting the film, Sony included quotes from Ferdinand Magellan. It is possible that the movie will be remixing events from the first three Uncharted games with Sir Francis Drake and Magellan playing a role as the reference guides for our heroes. It would be the proper way to get fans of the game excited for something new while also attracting the general movie audience.

Whatever Sony has planned for this movie, it is best to have it remain somewhat of a mystery to stay on brand with the spirit of the game. The Uncharted movie is set to be released on July 16, 2021 in IMAX, RealD 3D, and Dolby Cinema.
