What’s New In Indie Games For 2021 (And The End of 2020)?
On December 15, 2020, in anticipation of the new year, Nintendo hosted a virtual Indie World Showcase, encompassed in a video coming in at just over 17 minutes, highlighting some of the best and brightest indie games for the Nintendo Switch that will be coming out in 2021, and some that have already been released (or will be by the end of December). With a list totaling 19 games — some familiar, and others that will be new and interestingly quirky — this showcase shines a bright light on what is looking to be an exciting year for the gaming community.
As a brief disclaimer from Nintendo, these release dates are not set in stone, as the pandemic has been changing many release dates. The dates stated in this article may change in the future.
In this enticingly quick Indie World Showcase video, Nintendo introduced 19 games that will be available on the Switch in 2021, as well as some games that are coming out this December (some of them are already here!). Without further ado, let’s get into this list of some of the most anticipated games being released on the Switch from many of Nintendo’s indie brand partners worldwide.
Spelunky and Spelunky 2
Spelunky and Spelunky 2 are both coming to the world of Nintendo Switch in the summer of 2021. From Mossmouth and Blitworks, Spelunky 2 is a great sequel in the Spelunky game series, with the second edition having a larger world to explore and even more secrets to discover. With randomly generated levels, and an abundance of traps and monsters to discover along the way, these games are such an exciting addition to the world of Switch games. For those who enjoy multiplayer options, an interesting note is that Spelunky will have a local multiplayer feature, while Spelunky 2 will have both local and online multiplayer options.
For all cat lovers out there, Fisti-Fluffs from Rogue Games, Inc. and Playfellow Studio will be coming to the Switch in early 2021. For fans of battle royales, this cat-tle royale (pardon the cat pun) is the purr-fect (not sorry about that one) game to play if you love cats, and enjoy duking it out to the end. These cute kitties have adorable costumes, and will use anything to their advantage as they battle each other.

A game that will surely uplift your spirits if you’ve been bummed about not being able to travel in 2020, Tunche is a hand-drawn mystery adventure game that takes place in a world that was modeled after the Amazon Rainforest. With five heroes to choose from, rainforest secrets to discover (including the Tunche beast), a touch of witchcraft, and local co-op play, this game from LEAP Games Studios and HypeTrain Digital is sure to excite everyone who plays it. The game is set for Switch release in March of 2021.
in this apocalyptic game from Yacht Club Games and Mechanical Head Studios, you (a ninja) will be pitted against an evil doctor and his synthetic army after they have taken over a futuristic world. In Cyber-Shadow, which will be available on January 26, 2021, players will battle through the levels, and face over a dozen terrifying bosses. As you rescue your fellow ninjas, you will unlock skills, such as summoning fire or parrying death blows, which will help as you as you progress. In a Switch exclusive feature, you can scan an amiibo from the Shovel Knight series to get some help from a familiar character.
Available to play on the Switch now (it was released on 12/15/2020), Calico is a relaxing, easy on the eyes game, where the only goal you have is to fill your café with plenty of furry feline friends. By adding furniture, décor, and tasty treats to your café, players can create a space where cats will love to hang out. If you’re looking for an escape from reality, this title from Whitethorn Games and Peachy Keen Games is the game for you!
Alba: A Wildlife Adventure
In a stunning display of gameplay and Mediterranean island wildlife, Alba: A Wildlife Adventure from PiD Publishing and ustwo games is a relaxing and exciting game. Players control Alba through the game as she works with her Grandad, her friend Ines, and recruited volunteers around the island to save animals, plants, and the whole island. With beautiful beaches and an ancient castle to explore, this wild game, coming in Spring of 2021, is sure to please those of us who have been dreaming of a tropical getaway.
Coming to the Switch in early 2021, Gnosia from Petit Depotto and Playism is an intensely creepy social deduction game. In this indie title, the Gnosia blend in with the crewmembers and must be found before they kill everyone. With a usual playthrough time of 5 to 15 minutes, a customizable number of Gnosia, a max of 14 NPCs, and many roles to play, Gnosia is going to be absolutely amazing for lovers of horror and deduction games.
