What’s-a Up With Mario?

Looking at him from a surface perspective, Mario is pretty simple when it comes to character design and game interaction. If he wasn’t the gaming sensation that he is, he would just be another character out of the thousands that have been created throughout the world of gaming. Something about his charm, his backstory, his fellow characters, and the world that is Super Mario has led to Mario being one of the most well-known game characters in the world. Let’s play our way through to find out what’s up with Mario!

Mario is a pretty simple character if you just take him at face value. When Mario was first created by Shigeru Miyamoto and Gunpei Yokoi in 1983, it would have been hard to imagine that he would one day become the gaming icon of a generation. However, when you take a closer look at Mario, it starts to become clear why he is so iconic. It really comes down to his charm as a character, his backstory, his fellow characters, and the whole world of Super Mario. All of these aspects feed into the absolutely mind-boggling fandom that has developed around Mario across the world.

Mario has a certain, quirky type of charm that is a little difficult to describe. He’s a bit odd, but it’s a type of odd that makes you want to get to know him. He’s not always exceptionally nice (depending on the game and what other characters are involved) but he’s just wonky enough that somehow it doesn’t damage his character. It’s hard to find an exact word to describe Mario, but whatever he is, his personality has drawn us in for decades, and there is no sign of this fascination with Mario slowing down at all. No matter how much Mario the gaming community gets, we always want more.

Mario’s backstory has been continuously added to since his first appearance, and no matter what age you may be or what specific game from Super Mario you enjoy, there is something for everyone. I have only been playing Super Mario games for about three years, and within that time frame and the games that have come out within it, I already have a full backstory for Mario in my mind. The fact that Mario has been around since the 80’s means that his backstory has been growing and evolving for ages now, and it has become just as, and perhaps more important than the actual gameplay in his games.

The characters that Mario is teamed up with are interwoven with his extensive backstory, and many of the characters really help to make Mario what he is. When I think of Mario, I think of Luigi in the same breath, and Princess Peach follows soon after. Mario wouldn’t be who he is without his friends (and enemies) who have been with him throughout these many years.

The fame of Mario and the entire world of Super Mario are intertwined in a way that cannot be fully separated. Mario is famous in part because of Super Mario, and Super Mario is famous because of Mario (and his friends). It is impossible to think of one without the other, and really, this connectivity of everything in the world of Super Mario is the root of the legend of Mario. Mario will forever be an absolute icon of the gaming world, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
