I’ve only written about one of the holiday limited-time modes which COD has released in the last 6 months. That being said, I find all of them terrible. I didn’t love writing about “Kiss Confirmed’s” stupidity, and until now, I’ve held off on writing about others because they’ve frustrated me so much. But now? Now, I’m ready. Let me dive into a few of these modes and break down both why they were so bad and what Call of Duty could do better.
Kiss Confirmed was released this last Valentine’s Day, and it was really stupid. There is really no other way to say it. As you may have guessed, it was COD’s attempt to try and bring some lovey-dovey spirit to the game, but they failed. The mode was pretty much exactly like the mode Kill Confirmed, but instead of picking up dead enemies’ dog tags to score points, you picked up little hearts. I can’t be the only one who thinks this was super lazy, right?
The St. Patrick’s Day limited-time mode was just as bad. It was called St. Patrick’s Stockpile, and it was very similar to the normal mode “Grind,” only instead of picking up dead enemies’ tags and delivering them to the bank to score points, you picked up little clovers and delivered them to the bank. Like, come on Call of Duty, is this really the best you can do? For a series that has millions upon millions of dollars to put into each game, it seems silly that they would not put in more effort to make these modes more fun.
I can’t sit here and tell you that I could come up with perfect Holiday limited-time modes for the game, but that’s not my job. Still, I know I could do better than these lame modes. Here are a couple of my ideas.
I think it could be cool to turn all or some of the maps a different color to match the holiday they are trying to represent. For Valentine’s Day, some of the maps could have been pink, and for St. Patrick’s Day, some of the maps could have been green. You get the idea, right? This would not have been a hard thing to do, but it would at least have shown some effort.
The game could also delve into the love aspect of Valentine’s Day beyond just floating hearts. Maybe, there could be a game mode where one person starts off being lovesick and goes around trying to shoot other people to also make them lovesick. I know this sounds a lot like the mode Infected, but with some slight gameplay edits— maybe a kissing animation when someone becomes lovesick?— these two ideas are already better than the modes that they came up with.
At the end of the day, I just want to see some more effort. The fans of the game deserve to feel like the developers actually care and are not just pumping out easy content. What do you all think? Are these modes actually really bad, or am I just being lame? Let me know in the comments below.
