I still remember the day I bought the first Watch Dogs game. I was so excited to play, I biked all the way to Gamestop in order to get it, and, panting, I left with the game in tow.
I probably should have read some reviews of the game first, because it ended up being pretty-much total crap. I mean, I’ve played worse, but the way Ubisoft hyped up this game made it seem like it was going to be a high-quality hit, and it simply wasn’t. So, what exactly was wrong with it? Let me break it down for you.
By the way, I will try to stay away from spoilers as much as I can, but I make no promises.
For starters, the game didn’t look great. Watch Dogs came out back in 2014. This wasn’t that long ago, so there was no reason for the game to look as bad as it did. The colors were lazy and the design seemed all-around rushed. What’s more, our main protagonist is just so boring. I never really cared about him at all throughout the entire game- he ended up as just a voice in the back of my head.
The missions were also so repetitive. The hacking mechanics were cool to start out with, but they quickly became boring. All the missions just had you doing the same things over and over again in order to reach a goal. There was so much potential with these hacking mechanics, but again, it just seemed pretty lazily done.
Probably the worst thing about this game was the glitches. There were so. Many. Glitches. I felt like I couldn’t go one mission without a glitch messing up my play. Glitches were such a problem in this game that people made extensive montages of every single glitch in the game’s code. You can watch one below- some are actually pretty funny.
Bottom line: this game pissed me off as much as it did because Ubisoft really made people think this was going to be an industry-changing game. The trailers and the way they talked about it in pre-release hyped it up to no end, but the end result was just a slightly below-average game that was really nothing special whatsoever. Since the release of the first game, multiple sequels have been put out. I haven’t even had the thought to play any of them, so I have no idea if they’re any good. If I had to guess, I would say they’re probably around the same quality as the first.
