Microsoft announced their plans to introduce backwards compatibility for the Xbox One at their E3 2015 press conference. This initiative was put in place to allow certain Xbox 360 games to be supported on the Xbox One via an emulator. That November, Xbox One users were given the option to choose from a library of 100 Xbox 360 games, including such gems as Halo Reach and Mass Effect. Since the announcement in 2015, Microsoft has made it their mission to give generations of players access to many games across their production timeline despite the hardware being used.
Now Microsoft is taking backward compatibility a huge step forward by giving Xbox Game Pass Ultimate members a collection of sixteen original Xbox and Xbox 360 games to play on their Android phones and tablets. A number of these releases also utilize official touch controls when played on the appropriate devices. “We’ve listened to the feedback, going all the way back to our earliest cloud gaming preview, and making games from previous generations available on mobile devices has been one of the most requested features by the community,” said Microsoft. Here are the list of games being added to xCloud according to Xbox Wire:
- Double Dragon Neon
- Fable II
- Fallout: New Vegas
- Gears of War 2
- Gears of War 3
- Gears of War: Judgement
- Jetpac Refueled (touch controls enabled)
- Perfect Dark
- Perfect Dark Zero
- The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind
- The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
- Viva Pinata (touch controls enabled)
- Viva Pinata : TIP (touch controls enabled)
While xCloud is only available for Android users, Microsoft is still planning to extend the service to iOS via the web and PC via the Xbox App in spring 2021. Microsoft wasn’t able to support iOS at the launch of xCloud due to Apple’s imposed limitations on cloud services, hence their decision to provide mobile web offerings. Phil Spencer, business executive for Microsoft, has stated that the company has also considered bringing xCloud to smart TVs and streaming sticks. There have also been ongoing trials for testing PlayStation DualShock controllers with hopes of giving players the freedom of choosing their preferred gaming accessories with the xCloud service.
Xbox Game Pass Ultimate gives subscribers the same benefits as Xbox Live Gold with the inclusion of xCloud, an EA Play membership, and a library of over 100 games for PC, Android, and the latest Xbox consoles for $15 a month.
